About Hamilton For Rent

Hamilton For Rent is a research site for people renting in Hamilton. It publishes public data — schools, neighbourhoods, census and rent surveys — with the source named on every figure.

Who runs it

Hamilton For Rent is operated by DistrictIQ Inc., Brokerage, a registered Ontario real-estate brokerage. That is worth stating plainly, because it explains both what this site is and what it is not.

The brokerage runs a rental and property search at districtiq.ca (opens DistrictIQ in a new tab) where the live listings live. This site carries no listings, no prices and no availability.

Hamilton is a city where the answer to almost every housing question is “which part?” — and the public data that would settle it is scattered across a provincial school file, a federal census, a national rent survey and the City’s own open data portal. This site puts those four in one place for renters, with the source named on every figure.

It covers 157 publicly funded schools and 95 neighbourhoods using the City of Hamilton’s own published boundaries, which is why an area like Kirkendall appears here as one place rather than the two directional planning units the City files it under. Where a name in common use has no published boundary — Waterdown, Binbrook, Mount Hope — there is no page for it rather than a guessed shape.

What it does not do is guess. Hamilton’s rental stock is old enough and varied enough that the interesting questions — what a specific flat costs to heat, whether an upper unit is registered, how bad the escarpment climb is at 8am — are not in any dataset, and this site does not pretend otherwise. It gives you the public facts and says plainly where they stop.

When a page links to DistrictIQ it says so, names the destination, and only claims a page exists when that page was verified to exist. If we have no useful destination for a school or a neighbourhood, the link says that too.

What we will not do

  • Publish real-estate listing data, prices, availability or listing-derived statistics.
  • Rank schools, or turn assessment results into a score or grade.
  • Publish attendance boundaries we cannot verify, or imply that renting at an address guarantees a school place.
  • Attribute a rent figure to a geography smaller than the one it was surveyed at.
  • Fill a missing field with an estimate. If a source does not publish it, the page says so.
