Renting in Hamilton with children
School and child care questions change a rental search more than almost anything else. Here is how they actually work in Hamilton, and what this site can and cannot tell you.
How this works in Hamilton
Hamilton’s four boards make the usual advice — “check the catchment” — more complicated than it sounds. HWDSB and HWCDSB assign by address; Conseil scolaire Viamonde and Conseil scolaire catholique MonAvenir run a small number of sites that serve the entire city, so a French-language school across town may be the one your child is entitled to attend.
Add the escarpment and a school two kilometres away can be a twenty-minute drive up an access road. If you are weighing addresses on opposite sides of the brow, do the trip once at the hour you would actually be doing it.
An address is assigned to a school by the board, not by distance
A child care licence is not a space
Hamilton's schools are split across four boards
The Hamilton-Wentworth District School Board and the Hamilton-Wentworth Catholic District School Board run the large majority of schools in the city. Conseil scolaire Viamonde and Conseil scolaire catholique MonAvenir run the French-language public and Catholic schools respectively, with a smaller number of sites serving a much larger catchment.
That matters when you are house-hunting: the French-language boards draw from across the city, so proximity works very differently for them than for the English boards.
The escarpment shapes the school run too
A school two kilometres away on a map can involve an escarpment access road, which changes both the drive and whether walking is realistic. If you are weighing two addresses on opposite sides of the brow, walk or drive the route once at the time of day you would actually be doing it.
Where a school sits inside one of the neighbourhood boundaries on this site, its page names that area and links to it — so you can see the census picture, the parks and the transit stops around it in the same place.
